What a wonderful world! Honor jazz legend Louis Armstrong at Satchmo SummerFest, a two-day event featuring all-day jazz, Louisiana fare and a lecture series on the musician’s enduring legacy. When you’re ready for dinner, switch up cuisines and visit Roma Italian Bistro in Bastrop for New York-style pizzas and veal marsala. Its Chemin-A-Haut State Park is a haven for nature lovers and features a centuries-old cypress dubbed “Castle Tree” visitors love to paddle to. Less than an hour away, you’ll find Morehouse Parish, which is worth the drive. A variety of soul, jazz and blues musicians perform throughout the day, while good eats (think: cornbread, collard greens and catfish) accompany the tunes. Louisiana Soul Food Heritage Festival, a one-day event in Lake Providence’s Courthouse Square, puts joy on the main stage.
